Tebori is the Japanese method of tattooing by hand
that literally means to carve by hand.
Irezumi and horimono mean tattoo
but are often used for referring to traditional Japanese tattoo styles
whether they were done by an electric machine or by hand,
but usually referring to the latter.
The tool it self is fairly simple
, consisting of a long thin handle,
often a piece of bamboo,
with needles attached.
The needles are dipped in ink
and pushed in to the skin
by holding the tool with the right hand,
resting the tool on the left hand while it stretches the skin,
and forcing them in
with the forward movement of the right arm.
Often noticed by people unfamiliar with this method
is the sound the puncturing of the skin creates called shakki
The tattoo artists (horishi) will use a range of different sticks
with various numbers of needles attached to them to complete a design,
as little 3 for details
and many more for color and shading,
as many as 27.
This method is time consuming
and more painful than the western method.
The method it self is very simple,
pushing ink into the skin,
it’s the technique and skill of the artists that is important
because they are doing all of the work.
Compared to the electric tattoo machine
tebori is much more detailed
and the artist must have more practice and control.
They need to master all the styles of shading and techniques used create traditional Irezumi.
